Programs
At present, Bay Localize is focused on three initiatives:
Bay Area 2020 Our newest program offers a clear-eyed view of the key challenges we face as a region and an action plan to address them. In response to rising energy costs and the effects of climate change, we're developing tools, engaging changemakers, and implementing policies to build a more resilient Bay Area.
Bay Localize is currently piloting a Community Resilience Toolkit with select community groups. We plan expand our Toolkit trainings and other workshops for localization activists. We're hosting educational forums on localization topics, often in tandem with conferences or other events, in order to deepen our understanding of the issues we're facing and broaden the dialogue about what resilience should look like. In addition, we are building a Local Resilience Network of self-reliance leaders spanning the nine-county Bay Area in order to better support one another, share best practices, and advance a regional agenda. Local Clean Energy Campaign In collaboration with our allies, Bay Localize's Local Clean Energy Campaign is working to build support for clean energy development in our region. Under California law, cities and counties can now act as buyers coops by purchasing their own energy in the open market, or by issuing tax-free bonds to invest in their own new energy facilities. With your support, we can assume greater control over our energy future and help area cities reach their goal of supplying 50% renewable power to their residents by 2017 -- a much higher goal than PG&E's. Use Your Roof! Project What kind of potential do urban rooftops (both residential and commercial) have for food-growing, energy production, and water collection? Current policies, research, and building codes aren't geared toward the development of rooftop resources. Bay Localize has produced a study assessing the feasibility of rooftop gardens, renewable energy, and rainwater catchment systems, and has developed a set of tools for building owners interested in starting their own rooftop projects.
